Sweet sweat; this devotional drip (2026)

Through Sweet sweat; this devotional drip, the dancing body appears as an archive of memory and transformation. Through sweat—the body’s most direct trace of labour, repetition, and dedication—she explores how the experiences of dance can be preserved beyond the fleeting moment. Referencing Chinese traditions in which paper representations of objects, such as ”joss paper,” are burned to send gifts to deceased relatives and ancestors, this work proposes how Lilian, as a dancer, might gift herself in her next life, the unique wealth of dance she has acquired in this one. In her work the body becomes both a carrier of accumulated knowledge and a ritual medium through which labour, presence, and transience are transformed into something that can continue to exist beyond life itself.

NB: These works are available to be purchased for temporary acquisition. The artist wishes for them to be returned to her family for traditional ceremonial burning upon her death. For the artist, the true value of these artworks exists in the work that takes place beyond the tangible object. The attached monetary values are therefore somewhat arbitrary, and is an invitation to consider a purchase as an investment into a living artist’s ongoing practice, rather than about a valuing of singular, aesthetic pieces of property or access to art ownership. The prices of these artwork reference Chinese culture, where the number 4 symbolises 'death' and 9, 'eternity', and hold poetics and balance between these two contrasting forces. As the artist considers these works an extension of her dance/body, they are not for private ownership and can only be acquired by public institutions.
